Advent is a four-week period in the Christian liturgical calendar that precedes Christmas Eve. The word “Advent” comes from the Latin adventus, which means “coming” or “arrival.” During this season, Christians focus on the themes of hope, peace, joy, and love as they prepare for the celebration of Christmas.
Many congregations, including Portholme Church, observe each Sunday of Advent by lighting a candle on an Advent wreath; each candle symbolises one of the four central themes.
- Week One: The first candle, known as the “Prophet’s Candle,” represents the Old Testament patriarchs and prophets, symbolising hope.
- Week Two: The second candle, called the “Bethlehem Candle,” corresponds to biblical readings about the prophecy of Christ’s birth in Bethlehem and stands for faith.
- Week Three: The third candle, referred to as the “Joy Candle,” highlights the role of John the Baptist and signifies joy.
- Week Four: The fourth candle, termed the “Angel’s Candle,” relates to the annunciation of Jesus’ birth to Mary by the Angel Gabriel, representing peace.
Additionally, the Advent wreath typically features a fifth candle, the “Christ Candle” – usually white – which is lit during the Christmas Eve service or on Christmas Day.
